D’Oh!
13 October 2024 | UpdatesWhat seems like an eternity ago BobW (friend of the BBS) told me about a great and simple(!) Wifi serial modem for the Beeb (or any other Micro with serial support). There’s a full write up on how to create this ingenious little device here so I won’t reinvent the wheel.
The parts I have used are slightly different:
MAX3232 RS232 to TTL Serial Port Converter (DB9)
From here on out I followed the instructions on the North Devon Retro archive above, the only exception being the need to hold the physical flash button located on the ESP8266 board as I plugged it in to my PC. The drivers were detected and installed allowing me to flash the ZiModem firmware (zimodem.ino.nodeemcu-3.4.bin) using the NodeMCU-Flasher. More information about ZiModem can be found at the official GitHub page.
My Beeb is attached to the other end of the central serial cable and after some awful soldering I was good to go...or so I thought, can you spot the error of my ways? ().
I’m not sure how this happened as I even checked when I ordered if I needed a male or female serial, nevermind! Needless to say, one of these is now on its way to me.
